NYU Coaching Program

Supporting medical educators and learners in the transition to residency

Transition to Residency Advantage (TRA) Program

The Transition to Residency Advantage (TRA) Program was part of the American Medical Association Reimagining Residency Grants program, launched in 2020 and currently in use in 9 residency programs at NYU and other programs across the country. This site includes the coaching faculty development program we use to develop medical educators as coaches, and materials to support coaches guiding learners who are making the transition from medical school to residency.

The coaching faculty development program builds off our faculty’s existing expertise as clinicians, educators, and mentors, and uses a flipped-classrom structure with videos and exercises to prepare faculty for three small-group live sessions.

Resources for coaches are provided to help guide individual and group meetings. Handouts to guide semi-structured meetings during the end of medical school, and then each quarter of the first year in the program are provided for coaches to use, based on the most relevant activities for the transitional stage. In addition, ad hoc tools to support visioning, goal-setting and other activities when most appropriate for the coachee's needs.
